Summary of Container Line Changes – taking effect 2017
Currently there are 4 main Shipping alliances. The Crurrent Alliances are G6, Ocean Three, 2m, and CKYHE. these will all be changing in early 2017 due to mergers and acquisitions. Currently CKYHE does not call in Halifax.
The G6 Alliance consists of American President Lines (APL), Hapag-Lloyd, Neptune Orient Line (NOL), Hyundai Merchant Marine, Mitsu OSK (MOL), Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) Line and Orient Overseas Container line(OOCL). the
Ocean Three Alliance consists of CMA-CGM,China Shipping Co. Ltd. (CSCL) and United Arab Shipping Co.(UASC).
the 2m Alliance, is not surprisingly made up of Maersk line and Mediterranean Shipping Co.(MSC). only Maersk makes a weekly call in Halifax. the CKYHE Alliance consists of Cosco Container Lines, “K” Line, Yang Ming Line, Hanjin Shipping, and Evergreen Line.
these alliances are getting a big shakeup. Hyundai Merchant Marine is Joining the 2m Alliance for 2017.
In the past year, CMA-CGM (Ocean Three) Bought APL (G6) and NOL (G6) and COSCO (CKYHE) and CSCL (Oceans Three) were merged into China Cosco Shipping by the Chinese government. They will be joined by OOCL and Evergreen line to form the Oceans Alliance (Route Details)
Also HAPAG-Lloyd (G6) merged with CSAV in 2014 and bought UASC (Oceans Three) in 2016. it was also announced this year that NYK (G6), MOL(G6) and K Line (CKYHE) are merging into a new entity. Hanjin recently went Bankrupt.
these lines, along with Yang Ming have formed The Alliance (Route List), although Hanjin will likely be sold or Liquidated.
ZIM restructuring due to high debt, but so far is remaining independent. ACL is also remaining independent, though it currently has slot Charters with Hapag-Llyod, and predicts growth with their new G4 Series ships. Bahri, Nirint, Melfi, Eimskip, Oceanex all run smaller specialized services, focused on supplying small geographic areas and are likely unaffected by the shakeups of the larger lines.
UPDATE: After this post was initially posted, tropic shipping announced they will be moving to Halifax from Saint Johns NB in January 2017. This will add a weekly call to the Caribbean.
OOCL Kuala Lumpur
With OOCL Joining the Oceans Alliance Next year, Expect an end to OOCL Calls at Fairview Cove. OOCL is currently part of the G6 Alliance with Hapag-Lloyd. which will also be restructuring next year.
Container Lines Shakeup
CMA-CGM, the french shipping line, this week purchased NOL, also known as the Neptune Orient Line. NOL are the owners of APL ( aka American President Lines). Both Companies Currently Call in Halifax – APL as part of the G6 Alliance, and CMA-CGM as Part of the Ocean Three (or O3) alliance.
It has been stated that on completion of the transaction, APL will pull out of the G6 Alliance, and Join O3 – this likely means their ships will continue to call in Halifax, Just for the Weekly CMA-CGM Call.
The G6 Alliance will also likely still call, though another line will need to provide vessels to replace the APL Ships. The O3 Alliance is currently CMA-CGM, China Shipping and the United Arab Shipping Co. The Current G6 Alliance members include American President Lines, Hapag Lloyd, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Mitsui (MOL), Nippon (NYK) and OOCL. the Halifax Legs are currently staffed by ships from OOCL, NYK, Happag-lloyd and APL.
APL Scotland to Fairview Cove.
Todays G6 Service Arrival is the APL Scotland. Built in 2001 by Samsung Heavy industries in Korea. She carries 5514 teu.
This is her first visit to Halifax.
APL Belgium, Tied up Backwards, at night
From Friday Night, APL Belgium tied up in the opposite direction as normal. This makes for better photos, particularly at night.
APL Coral To Fairview Cove.
APL Coral Arrived on the G6 service today and tied up at the west pier of Fairview Cove. On arrival, she tied up port side to the pier, which is opposite of normal, however makes for better photographs. (For comparison, See our Singapore Express Post.)
NYK Daedalus to Fairview Cove.
Todays arrival brought another NYK Vessel, NYK Daedalus. Built in Korea in 2007, she is rated at 4800TEU.
NYK Meteor for Fairview Cove
NYK Meteor arrived this morning from Rotterdam. She will Sail overnight for NewYork as part of the G6 Service.
Built in 2007, she is registered in Panama, and carries 4800TEU.
APL Agate for G6
Sunday brought the weekly G6 Arrival, APL Agate to Fairview Cove. Part of American President Lines, she is american registered in Oakland California. You can see rolled up anti-piracy netting on her stern which makes the lower openings inaccessible to potential boarders.
