Halifax Shipyard Improvements

Halifax Shipyard announced what the revamped shipyard would look lie last week, and released some renderings to go along with it.

the plan calls for an entirely new building, featuring a new Assembly Hall with a Steel Assembly area containing a 12m wide panel line and sub-assemblies area, and 11 Unit Assembly /pre-outfit/ 3D unit workstations for pre assembling components.  as well as an dedicated paint area used for painting of outfitted Units.

An Ultra Hall (47m high, 408m long) used for Block and Mega Block assembly and Painting will also be constructed.

As seen in the rendering bellow, the launching system will be very different. A land level Construction Point will be constructed in the area around pier 8 at which final ship erection would occur prior to launch. this will abut the existing pier 9. A launch barge area in which a barge would be positioned to receive the complete ship, along with A serviced outfitting pier (165m in length) located alongside the ship erection platform

this would suggest that the existing launching ways will be removed, meaning Hero Class #9 will be the last vessel launched from them.

Hero class #7 rolled out for painting

Hero Class #7 CCGS A. LeBlanc was rolled out this weekend for painting. After her, there are only 2 vessels remaining to be built.

CCGS A. LeBlanc, after Fishery Officer Agapit LeBlanc, of Bouctouche, New Brunswick. Mr. Leblanc joined the Canadian Fisheries and Marine Service in 1920. He was killed on October 20, 1926, while investigating illegal fishing vessels. His murder remains unsolved.

Halifax ShipYard Improvements

Work is well underway on the shipyard improvements. Parts of the old structure have been Taken down, and foundations for the expanded building and pier are now under construction. the wall along Barrington street is also being repaired.

For an idea of what it will all look like, have a look at his page, which shows a model built for the yard a few years ago.

Blue Putties to Depart this afternoon.

Blue Putties is scheduled to depart Halifax Shipyards this afternoon. Recent Past ferry departures have been delayed affairs – we will see if this one is on schedule.

UPDATE: She was, she left the dock just after 15:30, and headed outbound. (Below – Close up of the repaired and re-painted bow)

The Chronicle Herald reports that Marine Atlantic stated they expect her to resume service Tuesday evening, though she does not appear to be on the schedule.

Halifax Shipyards Expands (Into Dartmouth)

This past weekend it was reported that Irving Shipbuilding has purchased the former Maritime Steel Site at 604 Windmill Rd. in Dartmouth. The sale occurred in June. The site is currently home to a precast concrete Highway Barrier facility.

Though the site has waterfront, it is located next to a piece of land owned by the Halifax Port Authority which has the former Scunda Pier. This pier is probably best known as the location of the Rusted former Russian Offshore supply vessel that was sent for crap last year.

Though Plans have not been announced, it is likely that Steel cutting, or even module assembly tasks will be done at this facility with components being barged over to the Halifax Facility.

Blue Putties for the Nova Dock

This Past Friday Saw the arrival of the Marine Atlantic Ferry Blue Putties for bow repairs After she ran into the pier in Port Aux Basques NF. She re-floated on high tide.

Given that she isn’t ballasted to raise the bow, I suspect damage is probably limited to the bulbous bow. She Entered the nova dock on Sunday Morning.

UPDATE: Roland Kettle was kind enough to let me use some of the pictures he posted to the the Marine Atlantic facebook group.

5th Hero Class Launched today

Alas, I missed it. Photos of her along side at pier 9 to follow.
