HRM Looks to build More new Ferries

HRM released an Expressions of interest for the construction of 2 new Ferries. These new vessels will be built to the same plans as the 4th ferry currently under construction by AF Theriault & Son.

From the Document:

Metro Transit’s existing ferries were constructed in 1978 (Dartmouth III and Halifax Ill)
and 1986(Woodside I). As such, these ferries are approaching the end of their economic
lifespan. Metro Transit is currently engaged in a project to expand the ferry fleet with the
construction of an additional vessel in support of planned service improvements on the
Woodside ferry route to be completed in the spring of 2014 and as awarded to A.F.
Theriault & Son Ltd. – (Tender No. 13-009).

HRM now plans to construct two more ferries in years 2014-2015 and 2017-18

The documentation presented to Council surrounding the construction of the 4th ferry mentioned that it was the start of fleet renewal, and that engineering work would be transferable to replacement ferries fro Halifax III and Dartmouth III

Hero #8 to Be Rolled out for Painting

CCGS A. LeBlanc was spotted covered in tarps this morning suggesting that Hero #8 will be rolled out for painting this weekend. Hero #8 will become the CCGS M. Charles

CCGS M. Charles, after Seaman Martin Charles, S.C., M.B., of Bamfield, British Columbia, and Hereditary Chief of the Nitinat Band. Martin Charles, now deceased, devoted his life and career to saving lives. He earned the Medal of Bravery for his instrumental role in a search and rescue incident that began with a sunken fishing vessel and ended with the crash of the helicopter assisting in the rescue efforts.

First Call for newbuild Oceanex Connaigra

the new build Oceanex Connaigra Arrived in Halifax on her maiden revenue voyage and tied up at Autoport. She Was recently delivered from the builders in Germany, and is filling in For Oceanex Sanderling who will be heading to the NovaDock on the 13th. After Sanderling’s work period, Oceanex Connaigra will work on the Montreal route with Oceanex Avalon and Cabot.

Oceanex Confirms Connaigra to fill in for Sanderling.

VOCM News in Newfoundland reports that:

The Oceanex Connaigra has finished sea trials successfully in Germany and is expected to arrive in St. John’s next weekend. It will stay for a few days before sailing to Halifax to work that service while the Oceanex Sanderling completes a short dry dock.

The vessel will then move on to Montreal, where it will provide a fixed weekly service between the ports of Montreal and St. John’s.

UPDATE: Oceanex Connaigra is tentatively scheduled to make her first stop in Halifax on October 10th.

Oceanex Connaira now Registered in Canada.

With news that Oceanex Sanderling is due for a work period in October, Oceanex Connaira was quietly registered in Canada on Sept 20, And is currently conducting trials. Its possible she may make it to Canada in time to take over for the Sanderling.

 Oceanex Connaigra is being built by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft mbH & Co. KG of Germany, And was Announced in October 2012 She Launched May 31 2013.
