French Rubis Class Sub.

the Noon hour brought the arrival of the French Rubis class submarine. the exact identity is currently secret, but it would have to be one of the 6 boats in the class.

Powered by a nuclear reactor, she tied up at Shearwater.

The Tug Glenivis met the sub off Maugher’s beach with a barge, and recovered a towed array. this suggests the array may have gotten stuck in the deployed position and this was an unplanned stop to deal with that.

UPDATE: Marlant tweeted that the sub is FS Améthyste, and is here to re-supply.

USCGC KATMAI BAY Arrived Over Night

The Bay class icebreaking tug USCGC KATMAI BAY arrived at Tall ships Quay overnight.

the Bay class usually works in the great lakes, breaking ice, the ship is likely headed back to her home port of at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Katmai Bay, is named after an area of saltwater shoreline in the Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska, is the lead ship of a class.

The Ticonderoga Class guided missile cruiser USS hue City arrived for a port visit this morning. the ship is assigned to Carrier Strike Group 2, with the Carrier USS George HW Bush, however word is she is on a solo deployment, and sailed from Mayport Fl. on Sept 23rd.

She is named for the Battle of Huế, fought in the city during the Tet Offensive of 1968. Hué City is the only U.S. Navy ship named after a battle in the Vietnam War. She was Commissioned in September of 1991.

the Ticonderoga Class guided missile cruiser  USS hue City is due for a port visit tomorrow. the ship is assigned to Carrier Strike Group 2, with the Carrier USS George HW Bush.

She is scheduled at the pilot station for 0800, and should arrive at the Dockyard around 9am.

 

2 USCG Ships in the Harbour

2 US Coast guard vessels spent the weekend in Halifax. USCGC Mobile Bay is a bay class Icebreaking tug, and is likely heading for the great lakes for the winter  Baltimore for a refit. She is homeported in Wisconsin, and is due to return to the lakes before winter. This movement is common for this class of vessel, and the BAY class is a frequent caller at Tall Ships Quay. She is Due to Sail at 10am Tuesday.

USCGC Legare is a Medium Endurance cutter, based in Portsmouth Virginia. A member of the Famous Class of Cutter, she was commissioned in 1990. the Famous class of USCG vessel to Call in Halifax. she is due to sail from the dockyard on the 30th.

As far as my notes go, this is the first call in Halifax for both these vessels in the last 10 years.

HDMS Ejnar Mikkelson visits Dockyard.

Ironically, on the same day that USS Little Rock arrived after issues with ice, HDMS Ejnar Mikkelson a Danish Arctic Patrol Vessel also put into the dockyard.

Built in 2007, she is the second vessel of the Knud Rasmussen class, and normally works the waters around Greenland. Built to Polar Class 6, she is smaller and lighter then the Canadian AOPS, but has comparable speeds, and lacks a Hanger for helicopters.

USS Little Rock finally arrives

The Latest US Navy Littoral Combat ship finally arrived in Halifax this morning after wintering in Montreal. Built in the great Lakes, she was headed for open ocen in December when she had a small mechanical issue, and the ice set in.

Previous LCS’s have all stopped in Halifax, and Historically have had eventful voyages out of the Lakes.
