The NS Maritime Museum of the Atlantic put on a 3 day boat building course in August, where participants built a Bevans Skiff. 2 Vessels were completed, and passed Sea Trials.

Boat Construction At MMA
With the Maritime Heritage store gone for the winter, the NSMMA has opened up their shed to the Halifax Art Boat Project. From their Website:
The Halifax Art Boat Project is a community-focused art project where everybody can come join in building a real, floating, traditional boat right on the waterfront! We’ll launch the boat in Spring and turn it into a beautiful artwork as a community.
Funded by HRM Community Arts and in partnership with the Khyber Centre for the Arts and Eyelevel Gallery, the Halifax Art Boat is a community project inviting all ages and interests to collectively build a carefully designed boat. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and Waterfront Development have generously contributed space and resources as well.
This boat will be used as artist-in-residence housing, waterfront gallery and exhibit space, and sustainable off-grid living model. Featuring the five principles of youth involvement, community building, sustainability, artistic inspiration, and coastal exploration, everyone can explore their recreational interests while enjoying a traditional and fun community building project.
This project promotes individual participation by people who might be interested but who would be limited by financial barriers or otherwise unable to afford enrolling in a program that would offer similar skills and experiences.
Our core team guides the process of this multi-phase project and works hard to create opportunities for involvement of people from different age groups, culture identities, and backgrounds.
We’re also offering an Artist-in-Residence program and gallery which will be curated and operated by a team of artistic peers chosen from and by the local communities. This openness allows for innovative ideas to be quickly implemented and provides a safe mechanism for experimentation and exploration amongst the community and the artists.
In a Maritime province with long-standing cultural ties to coastal recreation, community boat building and strong families and communities, the Art Boat is a celebration and reinvigoration of this identity. Come join us on the Halifax Waterfront!

Row the South Shore
The ‘Row the South Shore’ project involves building and rowing a traditional dory over
150 nautical miles from Halifax to the Lahave River and back. The Project was concieved and is being executed by Peter L’Esperance. The boat is currently under construction at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and will be launchedJuly 1st , 2013. The rowing passage will take place between August 1st and 17th , 2013.
The principle aim of this project is to promote and facilitate conservation in Nova Scotia. However, a secondary aim is to provide businesses and individuals with an opportunity to offset the negative environmental impacts associated with their activities. Prior to departure, Peter will seek sponsors and donate any funds raised to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust, an organization which works on a variety of fronts to preserve areas of strategic ecological importance across Nova Scotia. Following the completion of the trip, the newly constructed dory will be sold and the proceeds donated to the Nature Trust.

Dorothea, Post Launch
Nova Scotia Sea Schools vessel Dorothea Launched this past Saturday. Shes tied up on the waterfront, Aclimating to her new watery home.

Dorothea, Today, Waiting to be Launched. She was rolled out of the shed yesterday, and placed on the barge. She will then be launched from the barge.

Dorothea Update
Shes almost ready for the water (Next Saturday) Dorothea now sports a full paint job. Big difference from when we first saw her back in December.
Dorethea Update
Work has been progressing on the restoration to the Dorothea. Dorethea has a new Transom, and the interior is scheduled to be painted this Saturday. Volunteers are needed for this, so feel free to stop by.

Work Continues on Dorothea
Work Continues on the Dorothea. Now pulling planks that are out, into the ribs. Chips in the hull are also being epoxyied back into place.
The wedges are under a member which is bolted through the hull to pull everything in tight. The Planks are then screwed down tight into the ribs.

Hike Metal Products for Sale.
From Tim Coltons Maritime Memo’s comes word that Hike Metal Products, a producer of all kinds of specialty government and other small vessels, is for sale. The yard is in Wheatley, Ontario, which is about 45 miles east of the Windsor-Detroit border.
Besides Building small craft for the Government, They also Built Several of the Maid of the Mist boats at Niagra Falls.
