Bomar Rebecca for Tropical Shipping

Bomar Rebecca tied up at pier 42 today on her weekly stop for tropical shipping.Tropical makes a weekly call on a route Halifax, Palm Beach, San Juan, Phillipsburg, Crown Bay. the other ship serving the route, Asian Sun, is currently tied up at Pier 9, having been emptied for maintenance last week. She will return to the rotation next week.

Unfortunately the CBSA setup their x-ray gear in the way of a good photo.

Asian Sun at Pier 9

Asian Sun arrived yesterday for Tropical shipping, and discharged her containers at pier 41. She moved to Pier 9 today and seems to be handling supplies. She Appears on Tropical’s schedule later this month. She has no departure date published as of yet.

Muntgracht to Fairview Cove.

Arriving into the setting Sun, the Spliethoff  M-class vessel Muntgracht put in for a very quick stop.  Tieing up just after 6 pm, she is scheduled to sail at 8pm. so short is the stay, that the tug Atlantic Oak tied up against the se wall behind her.

Cargo operations began right away, and appear to 20′ flat racks with radioactive material casks. You may recall a failure of one of these caused a scare on a ACL ship a few years ago. US Customs rules make it simpler to import these to Canada, then truck them to the US, rather then shipping directly.

Spliethoff seems to have taken over this business as of late.

Zim Changes – Halifax Added to CFX, Dropped from ZCP

Arsos in 2011 when she called on CMA-CGM’s Black Pearl Service.

Zim Has added Halifax to its new Canada Florida Express (CFX), service and  removed Halifax from ZIM Pacific (ZCP) loop Service. The Pacific loop was responsible for the arrival of the first 10000teu+ ship to call on Halifax.

The CFX Service will Operate as a fixed-day weekly service, the CFX will deploy two 1,300-TEU vessels and will have a rotation of Kingston, Miami, Halifax and Kingston. the vessels scheduled are AS FELICIA and ARSOS, and are scheduled to arrive April 3 and 10th respectively. Arsos Previously called on Halifax in 2011 as part of CMA-CGM’s Black Pearl Service.

Zim Operates 2 Other services to Halifax. APL Salalah – Biggest Container Ship yet

(Port of Halifax Photo via Facebook)

APL Salalah is due to arrive at Halterm in the pre dawn hours of Sunday morning and  will become the record holder for the largest containership to call in Halifax. ZIM Rotterdam Holds the record now at 10,064 TEU, and set it with her first arrival in June 2017. She and her sisters are now regular callers.

APL Slaah, now owned by french Shipping line CMA-CGM comes in at 10,960 TEU, handily beating the previous record. She is currently set to sail again after dark, so good pictures are unlikely.

Sunday Update – the Walkway along the Sea side of halter was gated shut, SO not even a photo from there was possible.

December catchup

December is always a busy month, and this past December lead to a lack of posting, though a number of notable things happened.

The bow section of the future HMCS Harry Dewolf was rolled out and attached, giving us the first view of what the completed ship will look like. The second vessel is also underway, and steel was cut for the third in Dartmouth.

In other New build navy news the NRU Asterisk arrived in Halifax and tied up at pier 20. I missed her arrival and the seaport was locked when I attempted to go get photos. The NRU prefix stands for Naval Replenishment Unit. She will operate with a civilian crew and military specialists, similar to the Royal Fleet Auxuilery (UK supply ships) or the American Military Sealift Command (USNS vessels)

PCTC Bess tied up at pier 27 to offload some heavy equipment. The general cargo vessel Floringracht offloaded some machinery, and then loaded what appeared to be rebar. with Container traffic up almost 20% over last year, which was also up significantly over the previous year, halterm is expanding its lay out area along marginal road, which will likely block photos like this in the future.

Selfoss put in 2 weeks ago fro Eimskip, and tied up at pier 42. This made for easy photography. On the 28th Aristomenis stopped at pier 42 for Happag Lloyd. The vessel was previously the Hanjin Netherlands, and was presumably sold or re-chartered after Hanjin’s bankruptcy. Hanjin logo is still visible on the funnel, under the Happag Lloyd orange paint, and her old name is still welded to the hull but painted over. The ship was built in 2011

Container Service to Portland Maine

Icelandic carrier Eimskip has announced a short sea feeder shipping service between the Port of Halifax and Portland, Maine. This new service feature will begin today with the arrival of the Selfoss at Halterm.  To deliver a weekly service, Eimskip is adding a third vessel to its Green Line rotation.

Eimskip did this once before in 2015, and of course AFL New England ran a short lived service.
