Stack em up!

Thanks to the Longshoreman strike at the Port of Montreal, and the volume of diverted containers coming to Halifax, PSA Halifax has had to relocate empties. Currently there are stacks in the Truck Marshaling area (Above) at pier 24 (below) and in the parking lot opposite Pier 21. Containers have moved in Ocean terminal areas near pier 27 as well.

Fortunately for PSA, the next two diversions are due at Ceres.

Full day at the Container Terminals.

Atlantic Sail departed in the early afternoon freeing the berth for MOL Mission, which spent the afternoon at Fairview cove, sailing at 10pm.

PSA Halifax finished working Maersk Palermo, which sailed at 8:30pm, very lightly loaded. Tropic hope was forward, and was due to sail at 10:30pm. Ef Ava, which sailed at noon, was also tied up earlier at pier 42, keeping all 5 cranes busy.

Port of Montreal Strike.

Last week in the Herald I outlined how ongoing labour strife could be an issue for the Port of Montreal, leading to a loss of Cargo in the longer term..

JOC posted an article suggesting 50% of Montreal’s cargo volume is Discretionary – shippers are not tied to the port, and use it for convenience sake. Summer whale and Winter ice delays, plus geographical challenges already were cause for concern for Montreal, and now labour issues are added.

After this article ran, one of the Longshore Unions at the port of montreal gave 72 hour strike notice for an indefinite strike, to begin Monday. That means effective tommorw, most terminals are shut down, Causing ships to divert.

A 4 day strike 2 weeks ago caused two MSC Vessels to divert to Halifax, Maersk to call out of Order, and Hapag-Lloyd sent a ship to Saint John NB. Canadian Pacific Railways re-acquisition of the line through Maine seems to be paying off, and CP has simply moved its customers to Saint John. Another Hapag-Llloyd ship called this week in Saint John.

MSC Rochelle arrived in the outer anchorage Saturday – its due at PSA Halifax on the 18th. The wait is required to maintain schedule, as a week is saved by calling in Halifax Vs Montreal.

Maersk Palermo arrived Sunday morning. it usually spends around 6 hours in port. this call the ship is due to sail late Monday afternoon.

Montreal Express and OOCL Belgium also look to be diverting to Halifax, Due on the 11th and 15th respectively. I expect more to divert given the nature of the labour actions.

MSC Diversions due to Montreal Strike

Labour strife at the Port of Montreal has caused both MSC Veronique and MSC Sariska to divert to Halifax, the latter pulling a u turn off Quebec. MSC Veronique arrived Sunday morning and spent the day, with a departure scheduled for 8 am Monday morning.

MSC Sariska arrived around 9pm, and has no scheduled departure at this time. Earlier in the week, Maersk Patras called on Halifax first, before sailing for Montreal to avoid a labour disruption there.

Update:
MSC Veronique sailed at 8am for New York. the majority of her cargo was discharged, and will be moved by rail. the MSC ships are only 4000teu, which allows them to reach Montreal with out encountering any draft or load restrictions.

MSC Sariska is due to sail at 4:30

Maersk Chicago – new Service for Halifax?

today brought the arrival of the Mearsk Chicago, a 6000TEU container ship, and the Second Maersk Lines call of the day. regular Caller Maersk Penang sailed, as the Maersk Chicago was arriving at the Pilot Station.

Maersk seems to have added Halifax as a call on its MECL1 Service. The service runs from the middle east, India, via Suez and Spain to Newark, Charleston, Savannah and Houston.

Official Schedules have not been updated, however Maersk Pittsburgh is also scheduled to call in Halifax,

AS Federica to Sail

After spending several weeks in the outer anchorage, the AS Federica has found work. the ship anchored in the basin over the weekend, likely to take on supplies, and is due to Sail the afternoon.

the ship was working on ZIM’s feeder service, and is now going to work on CMA-CGM subsidiary ANL. The ship is scheduled to sail from Saint John July 2 for New York, Savannah, Miami, Kingston, Rio Haina, Philipsburg and back to Saint John July 23

ONE Matrix – Another Magenta ship

ONE Matrix spent yesterday at Fairview cove. The second magenta colored ONE vessel to Call in Halifax. Given her lightly loaded condition, you can see the Magenta and White funnel striping quite clearly.

the ship was repainted in and renamed in March, so its fresh, and on its first trip out of refit. Infact, when I last looked at the schedule, the ship was still MOL Matrix.

the light load is likely due to the pandemic, with container volumes finally dropping off.

One Magnificence is Pink!

One Magnificence is a notable arrival as it is the first vessel to call in Halifax for ONE that is in the new ONE Branding – That is with the Magenta painted hull. ONE – short for Ocean Network Express, was formed in 2016 by the merger of the Container business of Japanese shipping lines NYK, MOL and K-Line

the Ship is the former MOL Magnificence, and the ship traded its MOL blue at its last drydocking. ONE will move its ships slowly to the new paint scheme as they are serviced.
