Beverly M1 to ECTug wharf

Mckiel’s Tug, Beverly M1 arrived today and tied up at ECTug on the Halifax waterfront. She left Quebec Nov 16, spent time in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, before arriving in Sydney NS. She departed Sydney yesterday and arrived in Halifax over the Noon Hour.

Tim Mckeil Works a Barge

The tug Tim Mckeil spent the weekend with a barge at Fairview Cove. They appear to be handling spools of some sort, which have been at the west end of the dock for several days now. Both were gone by last night, presumably to clear space for todays arrivals of Yantain Express and Tokyo Express.

Ocean Arctique with barges for the big lift

Due tonight is the tug Ocean Arctique. The tug is tandem towing two barges, abys and timberland to be used by American Bridge co. For the big lift.

The tug was finished at the Halifax shipyard, and the barge timberland was owned by the yard until it was sold in 2008. 
The tow has been slow, not making more then 6 knots, and only 2 for most of the day. The tug and tow are due to tie up at pier 9. As of midnight they had reached the pilot station

UPDATE: they did not come in last night. Now due to try again Noonish.

UPDATE: They picked up the pilot at noon, and  finally made Anchorage 1 by 2:30. here the tow was separated, and the barges moved to the Cherubini wharf. Above, Lady Shirleen and Belle D from RMI Marine are moving the Ocean Abys, Timberland is still in tow of Ocean Arctique

Svitzer Nerthus and Svitzer Njal Sail

The Svitzer tugs Svitzer Nerthus and Svitzer Njal Sailed this morning bound or Milne Inlet on Bafin Island. They arrived in June, and are to work a contract for the new Iron Ore mine there.

interestingly, they didn’t take Canadian names.  Nerthus is the Germanic Goddess of Fertility, hailing from an island in Denmark. Njal refers to a Character from an Icelandic Saga written in the late 1200’s.

Home Again – new Svitzer Tugs

The Tugs Svitzer Njal and Svitzer Nerthus Arrived in Halifax. If they look familiar, they were both built in 2009 at Irvings East Isle shipyard.

Svitzer Njal is the former Stevns Icequeen and Svitzer Nerthus is the former Stevns Iceflower. Stevns ordered the tugs, as replacements for tugs of the same name it had bought and then sold.  Stevns Icequeen became Fjord Saguenay in March 2009 and Stevns Icecap, became Svitzer Nanna, but finally joined her in 2011 as Fjord Eternite. These 2 tugs Work for Rio Tinto Alcan in La Baie PQ.

Svitzer Njal and Svitzer Nerthuswill get Canadian names and be registered in Canada. They will go to work at the port at Milne Inlet, which was constructed as part of the Baffinlands iron ore Project on Baffin Island. The project ships all its mined material between July and October.
