Hero #9, still in the Shop has been painted. As its the Last ship, and the building is coming down when complete, i assume they didn’t care about getting paint everywhere.
Hero #8 M.Charles, is due to be launched tomorrow Night, at 11pm.
With hero #8 rolled out, today brought the opening of the doors offering a peak at hero #9. She will likely be rolled out for painting at some point this weekend, though that may be dependent on the forecast.
Hero #9, the CCGS Captain Goddard M.S.M.,is named after Canadian Army soldier Captain Nichola Goddard, M.S.M, who has the distinction of being the first female Canadian combat soldier killed in combat, and the 16th Canadian soldier killed in Canadian operations in Afghanistan.
The second to last hero class vessel was rolled out on the weekend, after the delayed launch of CCGS A. Leblanc occured last weekend.
She was rolled out for painting way back at the Beginning of October. Much work that is normally completed in the yard appears to have been done indoors, inducing installation of the crane on the rear deck, and some antennas and other equipment. Once the mast is installed, launching should occur fairly quickly.
Noon hour brought the Departure of Fisheries Research vessel CCGS Teleost. A rare caller in Halifax, She is based in the Newfoundland Region. She was built in 1988 in Norway as a fishing trawler, before being acquired by the coast guard and modified for her new role in 1994.
JRCC Halifax tasked a helicopter from #103Sqn and a #405sqn Aurora aircraft to medevac a 23 Year old Male to St. John’s Yesterday. The injured crew member was successfully extracted from a Fishing Vessel 200 Nautical Miles South South East of St. John’s.
Props to RCAF 103Sqn for their amazing video as of late. This is better then the USCG ones. Hopefully it continues and spreads.
This year, the first and last vessels were regulars.
The last departure of 2013 was Scotian sea, who sailed around 7:30 pm. The last arrival of 2013 was Atlantic Cartier, around 10pm. She Anchored, in the basin, and Moved to Fairview at 8:30 on Jan 2
The First arrival of 2014 – CCGS Edward Cornwallis, around 5:30am on the first. The First Commercial Vessel was the Venture Sea – arriving 6am on the 2nd.
CCGS A. LeBlanc was spotted covered in tarps this morning suggesting that Hero #8 will be rolled out for painting this weekend. Hero #8 will become the CCGS M. Charles
CCGS M. Charles, after Seaman Martin Charles, S.C., M.B., of Bamfield, British Columbia, and Hereditary Chief of the Nitinat Band. Martin Charles, now deceased, devoted his life and career to saving lives. He earned the Medal of Bravery for his instrumental role in a search and rescue incident that began with a sunken fishing vessel and ended with the crash of the helicopter assisting in the rescue efforts.
though no release has been issued, CCGS Corporal McLaren M.M.V. is now tied up at BIO, and carries a Canadian registry. This signifies that she has been handed over from the Shipyard to the Coast Guard.
Work on Hero Class #7 CCGS A. LeBlanc has been progressing. it was rolled back last week, though there has been no sign of hero #8 outside the assembly hall.
The CCGS Corporal Mclaren MMV took to the basin for builders trials this morning. I believe this is the first time she has operated under her own power.
