MSC Sao Paulo to Fairview Cove.

MSC Sao Paulo took the western channel on arrival giving the waterfront a close view. The ship was calling on Fairview Cove, a first for MSC vessels which normally call at PSA Halifax’s Atlantic Hub in the south end. This may signal the start of ships calls being split between the terminals to balance load. MSC ships that call on halifax are typically under 4000TEU to make it through the river to Montreal, and are guaranteed to fit under the bridges with out difficulty.

The Atlantic Hub saw MSC Shanghai, which moved to pier 42 this evening after undergoing CFIA Moth inspection. MSC Shangai Called on Halifax up until last year as ZIM Shanghai. the ZIM Hull markings were still visible – the covering paint haven worn away. I missed getting a photo of her today, But her she is calling for ZIM in 2016

NYK Rumina gets inspected

The April 25th Call of NYK Rumina seems to have drawn the attention of the CBSA, which appeared to have a dive boat alongside. A Crewman can be seen on the deck, and a line is running from the Rumina to the CBSA’s Vessel.

NYK Rumina sailed on Schedule, so its unclear if the inspection revealed anything, nor is it known if the vessel was specifically targeted, or if this was part of normal customs operations.

The CBSA uses divers and ROV’s to search the underside of ships for Contraband. In a 2018 case, smugglers used divers to pack the sea chest of a Maersk vessel. Divers attempted to recover the drugs in Montreal, but abandoned the attempt, and were eventually caught in Halifax.

NYK Constellation to anchor in the basin to wait out weather after spending Saturday at Fairview cove. NYK Constellation was built in 2007, and is rated for 4888TEU. It currently operating on the Alliances AL5 service. AL5 serves Northern Europe, making stops in Halifax and Port Everglades Florida, before stopping in South America,passing through the panama canal, stopping in LA, Seattle, Vancouver, and Oakland. NYK Constellation is currently on the return leg, heading back to Southampton.

Hyundai Faith arrived Saturday and took to anchor to wait out weather before moving to the terminal this morning. the ship is serving on the Alliances EC5 service. the ship was built in 2008, and is rated for 8566TEU.

First look at new Fairview Cove truck access

Thanks to a presentation posted on the cities public consultation website Shape Your city, we now know what the new truck access to Fairview Cove will look like.

This access will be used to handle the majority of container traffic bound for both the Fairview Cove and PSA halifax terminal in the south end. the new access is off Africville road, in the general area where the dump trucks now access the infill area. Containers bound for PSA Halifax will be loaded on rail cars for transport to the other terminal.

Besides the truck access, the facility will feature a new inspection facility, presumably for use by CBSA to inspect suspect shipments before being forwarded on. that facility will include a shed, and a fenced in yard.

There is no word yet on the changes to the Windsor street exchange to improve access to the site, however the moving of the truck access will free up land making more space available for whatever the final result is.
