Halifax piers get bulk of gateway cash

Which will be spent on lengthening and deepening Halterm to accommodate 2 post panamax ships (and hopefully result in a bigger/better harbour lookoff), and Improvements and expansion to the Richmond terminals.

Aqualife comes to Port of Halifax

From the Article: “Aqualife Logistics, which has developed a process to move live seafood intends to develop a new service out of Halifax that will deliver product to central Europe. Maersk Line, which had been a regularly scheduled caller to the port, has been designated the carrier for the new business, likely between June and August.”

Proposed fast ferry for Bedford on hold for another year
It seems they don’t have a business plan.

CKYH Brings Box Service to Halifax
The CKYH alliance (Cosco Container Lines, “K” Line, Yang Ming and Hanjin Shipping) plans to use eight “K” Line vessels – Staring Sunday May 3 out of Halterm.

The CKYH Alliance, which includes shipping lines COSCO, K-Line, Yang Ming and Hanjin, announced a new all-water express service that will connect Halifax with the Far East. The weekly service, scheduled to start in Halifax May 3, will have eight K-Line vessels each with a capacity for 3,850 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units).

CMA CGM announces new Port of Halifax service

Halifax, NS – January 29, 2009 – CMA CGM, the world’s 3rd largest container shipping company, has announced plans to initiate a new service which includes a regular call at the Port of Halifax.

The fortnightly service will connect Canada and the USA with the Caribbean, Central America, South America and Australasia. In particular, Canada, the US Midwest and the East Coast of the US will be connected via CMA CGM’s Kingston, Jamaica hub to a broad range of North-South and East-West trade routes.

Halifax is the only Canadian port of call on the new service. The inaugural call of the “Black Pearl” service to the Port of Halifax is scheduled for Monday, February 23rd. Container handling services for CMA CGM vessels will be provided by Halterm Container Terminal Limited.

2009 Cruising Season

It Seems the Port Authority has launched a new website www.cruisehalifax.ca to encourage Halifax as a cruising destination.

“The 2009 season in Halifax will be marked by highlights such as the inaugural call of Cunard Line’s Queen Victoria and a visit from Carnival’s Triumph, which has a capacity of 3,800 passengers and crew. On Oct. 8, Halifax will welcome five ships in one day, which could set a single-day passenger record of more than 10,000.”

Fairplayer to load Locomotives

The heavy lift ship Fairlayer made its first call in Halifax March 5 to 10, 2009 to load a consignment of twenty-two railway locomotives. Seven of the units are bound for Rotterdam and the remaining fifteen will go to Egypt.

 

The ship is fitted with a pair of 900 tonne capacity derricks which can be combined to lift 1800 tonnes. Her hull is specially adapted to carrry heavy and bulky objects. The ship’s owners, Jumbo Shipping, a Dutch company are specialists in heavy lifts and awkward loads that do not fit on conventional ships.

 

She is seen here leaving Halifax March 10 bound for Rotterdam. If you look carefully you can see a crew man in an orange suit at the top of the mast securing one of the derrick booms. These had to be lowered to clear the Angus L. Macdonald bridge.

The Halifax Port Authority has all this information in the Tarrifs List.

Harbour Dues $0.0531 per gross registered tonnage (grt) per vessel entry;
$0.0265 per grt for Canadian flagged.
Berthage Assessed at $0.0457 per grt per 12 hour period or part thereof up to 24 hours;
each succeeding 12 hour period or part thereof assessed at $0.0276.
Berthage is capped at 40,000 grt.
Anchorage After the seven days, assessed at $0.0115 per grt per 12 hour period or part thereof up to 24 hours;
each succeeding 12 hour period or part thereof assessed at $0.0068.
Passenger Charges In respect of continuous voyages or for voyages originating or terminating at the Port, charges are
as follows:

  • For each passenger $7.850
  • For each vehicle $9.332

Pilotage
administered by the Atlantic Pilotage Authority.
One way trip: $482 basic charge, plus $2.05 per unit. Minimum charge is $725.
Moveage (shifting): No pilot boat used: $386 basic charge, plus $1.64 per unit;
Pilot boat used: $433 basic charge, plus $1.85 per unit; Min. charge is $652.
Units are calculated as follows: [vessel length(m) x vessel breadth(m) x vessel depth(m)] / 283.17

Cruising Seson

Here’s a shot from this morning. We’re at the height of the cruise season in
Halifax. Some days there are two three or even four cruise ships in port.
