USCGC KATMAI BAY Arrived Over Night

The Bay class icebreaking tug USCGC KATMAI BAY arrived at Tall ships Quay overnight.

the Bay class usually works in the great lakes, breaking ice, the ship is likely headed back to her home port of at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Katmai Bay, is named after an area of saltwater shoreline in the Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska, is the lead ship of a class.

USS Hue City for a port visit.

The Ticonderoga Class guided missile cruiser USS hue City arrived for a port visit this morning. the ship is assigned to Carrier Strike Group 2, with the Carrier USS George HW Bush, however word is she is on a solo deployment, and sailed from Mayport Fl. on Sept 23rd.

She is named for the Battle of Huế, fought in the city during the Tet Offensive of 1968. Hué City is the only U.S. Navy ship named after a battle in the Vietnam War. She was Commissioned in September of 1991.

USS Hue City is Tied up next to the Casino.

USS HUE CITY Due Tomorrow

the Ticonderoga Class guided missile cruiser  USS hue City is due for a port visit tomorrow. the ship is assigned to Carrier Strike Group 2, with the Carrier USS George HW Bush.

She is scheduled at the pilot station for 0800, and should arrive at the Dockyard around 9am.

1.Naming Ceremony
the future HMCS Harry Dewolf will actually become HMCS Harry Dewolf in a ceremony at Halifax Shipyards on October 5th. A bottle of NS Sparkling Wine will be broken on her bow.

the Rita Joe arrived in halifax over the weekend. Compare the Old and New ferries Wheelhouses. the Woodside 1 (From 1987) and the Christopher Stannix from 2014

Notable Moves

HMCS Moncton sailed on the 28th for Baltimore for fleet week, which runs Oct 3-9. HMS Monmouth, which is working with the new RN Aircraft Carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth II off Norfolk, will also be in attendance.

2.Compass House

The flower class corvette, like HMCS Sackville, originally had a short Foc’sal and an enclosed compass house on the bridge. when the foc’sal was lengthened, the compass houses were removed. One still survives today in liverpool.

This week I talk about changes to The Alliance’s AL6 service, and  ZIM’s ZCA Service. I also offer a bit of a followup on Last weeks Column where i talk about labour issues aboard a vessel currently operating on a Coasting trade waiver, and discuss the importance of Port state control.

Also in Wednesdays paper – Chester based Hawboldt has a contract to provide deck and anchor winches for the new Supply ships built by SeaSpan in Vancouver.  Horizon Maritime is in Merger talks with Nordic American Offshore.

 

New Halifax Transit Ferry Rita Joe Arrives.

the fifth and final new build Halifax Transit ferry Rita Joe arrived over the weekend. She was launched Sept 21 at AF Theriault in Meteghan.

there will likely be a few weeks of commissioning activities and testing before she enters service.
