CSL’s Newest Ship

Nukumi arrived in Halifax and tied up at pier 25. the ship is owned and operated by CSL for Windsor salt and was specifically designed to service Windsor’s Magdalen Islands salt mines. It is the first Diesel Electric Laker, and the first bulk carrier in Canada to have single point loading. The single loading point means the ship will not have to shift along its berth to line up with the ship loading equipment to fill all the holds.

Construction of the ship began in August 2020, and the ship departed Jiangyin, China for Halifax at the end of January.

Star Pyxis in the Basin

The bulker Star Pyxis has been riding the hook in the basin for a few weeks now, Possibly undergoing hold cleaning. Due to weather, the ship has had to reposition several times when the anchor started to drag.

The ship arrived Feb 2, after sailing form Contrecoeur Quebec.

Tanja in the Basin.

The Bulk Carrier Tanja has been sitting at anchor in the basin for the past several days, presumably waiting for better weather. the ship sailed from Grand Anse, on the Sagunay river in Quebec.

The ship is fitted to carry kaolin clay in slurry form. kaolin is used in the production of paper. recent high winds caused the ship to have to reposition after it started to drag anchor.

NACC Capri

the Pnumatic Cement Carrier tied up at pier 9 after arriving back form its 5 year survey in Portugal. The ship is operated by a joint venture between Algoma and Nova Short sea carriers of Luxembourg. (NACC being the abbreviated form of Nova Algoma Cement Carriers)

NACC operate the ship under contract to transport cement from the McInnis Cement plant, on the Gaspe peninsula in Quebec to locations up the great lakes. The ships basically use vacuums and air pressure to load and discharge powdered cement – preventing dust, and keeping the product dry.

In and out at Gold Bond.

Canada Day saw ships swapping places at Gold Bond Canada, which is the new name for National Gypsum’s Operations, lining up with one of their brands.

CSL Metis (above) sailed for Tampa allowing Algoma Integrity (below) to take her place. Algoma Integrity then sailed this morning for Baltimore.

Ships Laid up with issues

Imedghassen has been laid up for several weeks at pier 36. The ship arrived in Halifax January 9th, on its maiden call for Melfi lines, and was reporting a deficiency, which i am told is engine troubles.

Its unclear why the ship is still here, however there have been reports of engine damaged caused by new low sulpher heavy fuel oils which seem to have quality issues.

The bulk carrier Giulia 1 remains tied up at Pier 9 after an encounter with a large wave that resulted in injuries too 2 crew members, and the death of a third. it put into Halifax afterwards. The ITF were working to repatriate the crew, and get replacements in place to take over the ship.

CSL Tarantau at Pier 9

CSL Tarantau arrived at Pier 9 today for some work. A crane and an assortment of vehicles was noticed by the accommodation block, and the self unloading arm is swung out of the way. The ship is not appearing on AIS, suggesting it is partially powered down.

CSL Tarantau was is a Panamax Trilium Class vessel, built as Balto for Klaveness to operate in the CSL America’s International pool. in 2015, Klaveness sold its ships to pool Partners CSL and Algoma.
