March 21- The Largest Container ship to Call on Halifax.

The CMA-CGM Thomas Jefferson is due at PSA Halifax on March 21. At 14,414 teu, she will set the record for largest container ship to call. The previous record was set last January by CMA-CGM Libra at 11,388. sister ship CMA-CGM Abraham Lincon is also scheduled, as is the 13800teu APL Sentosa.

Largest ship to call in Canada was the Cosco Himalayas at 14,500teu. It’s first call was in Prince Rupert in 2017, and still holds the record.

Both Records will fall this june when the 15072 teu CMA-CGM Panama arrives, beating both east and west records. the ship is currently Due June 6th.

Columbus JAX service.

All the Recent record beaters have operated on the CMA-CGM Columbus JAX service, which sails from asia to both the east and west coasts. 18 vessels provide weekly service, and 1 voyage takes 126 days.

CMA-CGM Thames

The CMA-CGM Thames put in to pier 41 Saturday afternoon. the strong breeze had the vessel take 3 tugs to spin it around and back it into its birth.

though not the largest container ships to call in Halifax, CMA-CGM Thames and her class mates are the only vessels to have the forward bridge arrangement. Maersk Patras Was being worked at Pier 42.

Saturday Weather.

Weather was an issue on Saturday, with some ships moving, and others waiting it out. CMA-CGM Chennai, at just over 10000teu was forced to wait out her call until 15:00 on Sunday. She was worked over night, and sailed before noon on Monday.

With CMA-CGM Chennai not entering port Saturday morning, other container ships were moving.

Dimitra C, the former MOL Priority, arrived, and  waited in the basin for Dalian Express to free the Western birth. With Dalian Express Clear, she backed in and tied up.

Saturday Happenings

(Above)Arcia arrived on the weekly Maersk Call. Unlike last week’s call, she didn’t seem to attract additional attention from the CBSA. CMA-CGM Pelleas also called at Pier 41, on her weekly call. (Below) Nirint shipings’ Asian Moon finished unloading mud at pier 31, and sailed. Numerous pleasure craft caused her to make liberal use of her horn on her way outbound.

APL Salalah – Biggest Container Ship yet

APL Salalah is due to arrive at Halterm in the pre dawn hours of Sunday morning and  will become the record holder for the largest containership to call in Halifax. ZIM Rotterdam Holds the record now at 10,064 TEU, and set it with her first arrival in June 2017. She and her sisters are now regular callers.

APL Slaah, now owned by french Shipping line CMA-CGM comes in at 10,960 TEU, handily beating the previous record. She is currently set to sail again after dark, so good pictures are unlikely.

Sunday Update – the Walkway along the Sea side of halter was gated shut, SO not even a photo from there was possible.
