US Aircraft Carrier off NS.

the US Navy Aircraft Carrier USS Harry S. Truman,  and its strike group are currently believed to be operating off Nova Scotia.  Pictured above is the carrier with HMCS Halifax. (US Navy Photo)


On the 10th/11th C-2 Greyhound Aircraft were spotted at Halifax Airport, and the USS Arleigh Burke which spent last weekend at the dockyard is currently assigned the the Truman’s Carrier strike group. (Above photo by Barry S.)

Navy Today  mentioned HMCS Toronto, cruiser USS Normandy, destroyers USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98) and USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51), and fixed wing aircraft and helicopters from Carrier Air Wing One (CVW-1) will also be participating in the exercises.

Could this the them? Arctic is USNS Arctic – a civilian manned US Military Sealift Command replenishment ship.

1.man leaps from ferry, arrested naked in woman’s house
CBC reports on a man who released a life raft, jumped overboard, and swam for shore from a B.C ferry.

2.ZIM still hanging on

3. The Acadia is rusting
CSS Acadia, the only ship still afloat to survive the Halifax Explosion, and serve in both world wars is in danger of sinking. Her hull has rusted through, and her below decks are full of Mold. See also Global, and the Herald

4.Plastic in the ocean
CBC Reports that there is alot of it, and its really small.

5.Sunken Whale Ship found
the RCGS found a Scottish whaling ship that sunk in 1903. the discovery was made Aug 31, from the Adkelmelik Sergey Villow – the other vessel working for One Ocean in the Arctic.

6.CMA-CGM Cuts Container rates.
sending a container around the world is cheap. it just got cheaper.

7. Cruise Issues.

it was a bad weekend for cruise ships, with weather, mechanical and MOB issues.

Sept 11, 1942 -HMCS Charlottetown sunk by U-517 off Cap Chat PQ.

Sept 10 1941- HMCS Chambly and HMCS Moose Jaw sank U-501 – the first sub sunk by Canadians in the war.

Sept 9 1920 –  the whale ship Charles W. Morgan set sail on her last voyage. she as preserved and restored and is now atMystic Seaport.

Sept 7 1891- the first bridge across the harbour washes away in a hurricane.

Sept 6,1620 – the Mayflower departs England for the new world.

Harry Dewolf Launch this Week


the future HMCS Harry Dewolf had had the tarps taken down and is the correct shade of grey, with black boot topping and red below the waterline. some touch ups remain, but the SPMT transporters look ready to go to move the ship onto the Launching Barge.

I hear the launch is targeted for the 14th or 15th.

In, Out, and staying awhile.

(Above) Arsos backed into pier 42 just after noon. Shes running on the New ZIM Canada Florida Express service to Jamaica. Heading out from Autoport was Taurus Leader (below). Shes bound for New York.

Seamax Stamford (Above) is at Pier 41, calling on the Maersk line Med/Montreal express(MMX) service . The Bomar Rebecca (below) is hanging out at Pier 26. She was offloaded earlier this week, and went to pier 26, presumably to wait out Hurricane Florence. She sails for tropical shipping, which canceled their sailing this week.

A Weekend of Bad Cruise News

 

3 Cruise ship stories happened over the weekend.

1. Norwegian Dawn (above), scheduled for 3 days in Bermuda from Boston, was re-directed North due to hurricane Florence. Passengers spent Sunday in Halifax, then headed for Sydney, with a final stop in Saint John.

2. A passenger went overboard on off AidaLuna off Newfoundland. Daniel Küblböck is reported to be a 33 year old winner of a German singing contest tv show. Nearby vessel Holland America’s Zuiderdam is assisting in the search, along with Coast Guard and Airforce  resources.

JRCC reported that after an exhaustive air and marine search for Daniel Küblböck, a 33 year-old male who had reported to have gone overboard off the cruise ship AidaLuna, approximately 110 NM north of St. John’s, NL. has concluded. The SAR case will be handed to Newfoundland RCMP as a missing person case. Water temperatures are around 13 degrees.

Both AidaLuna and the Zuiderdam  are in Halifax Sept 11.

3. The cruise ship Star Pride, who stopped in Halifax on Sept 5th, lost power off Cape Cod, and needed to be towed into port. She is Due back in Halifax on the 13th.

#4. the TSB Announced it was investigating an incident during a lifeboat exercise yesterday, involving the crew of the Cruise Ship Amadea while secured at the Port of Québec, Quebec

The Amadea calls in Halifax from time to time.

Ngoni Gets Towed in.

The British sailing yacht Ngoni was towed in by Captain Jim last night, and tied up at Purdy’s Wharf.From AIS Tracks, she was left Rhode Island, and apparently had an issue of Liscomb NS. She made her way to Halifax, and was towed into the harbour.

the name is from a lute like string instrument originating in West Africa

When I went by her today, someone was working on the radar.
