End of Charter for Vivienne Sheri D?
The general cargo ship Vivienne Sheri D has been sailing for Eimskip for the past several years (also operating under the Names Pictor and Pictor J), however since 2021 the vessel is actually owned by the Doornekamp Group. After acquiring the vessel, it was reported that Doornkamp would leave the vessel on its charter.
The Doornekamp group also operate the picton terminal. in 2021 they acquired 2 ships, the other being Peyton Lynn C with a plan to move cargo form Halifax to Picton Ontario via the St Lawrence Seaway. Peyton Lynn C Currently operates with Spliethoff, and sails into the lakes seasonally. It seems likely Vivienne Sheri D will join that arrangement.
Eimskip recently added Bakkafoss, a new ship to the rotation. Foss is icelandic for waterfall, and the Bakkafoss is located on the Buoara river in Westfjords.
MSC Rossella at Anchor
MSC Rossella took to anchor in the basin this morning. The ship arrived from Montreal on the 10th and tied up at Pier 42. It is now scheduled to sail to barcelona, Giving an et of March 22, though it currently doesnt have a scheduled departure.
Built in 1993, the MSC Rossella is 30 years old, and carries 3398TEU
Fairwind Legion at Pier 9
Fairwind Legion was built in 2015 as Thorco Legion, and is currently managed by Franbo. The Thorco (and Franbo) vessels are frequent callers in Halifax to load cable tanks.
The ship sailed from Houston Feb 11, and arrived this morning.
The End for CCGS Alfred Needler
On Febuary 9th the Feds announced the the Alferd Needler would be retired. the ship had been scheduled for a 5 million dollar refit to stretch some more life out of it, but equipment failures, and hull damage caused by contact with the dock have brought an end to the ship.
The ship will be recycled.
Kolpit Hopson 1752 at BIO
The Kolpit Hopson 1752 emerged from Mid life extension refit in December, and was turned back over to the coast guard. Besides receiving a new name, The ex Edward Cornwallis was reengined, and a new crane was installed to replace the derrick it previously carried, as well as other upgrades and maintenance. The ships new name recognizes the two signatories of the Peace and friendship treaty of 1752.
W.N Twolan loads machinery
The W.N Twolan arrived in Halifax in December with the barge NT1802. Today it moved to Fairview Cove to load some cargo onto the barge at the RO-RO ramp. What look to be large motors were loaded onto the barge via SPMT.
The Tug was built by Davie 60 years ago. it spent most of its life in the the fresh water Great Lakes, and more recently spent time laid up. It was purchased by Halls Bay Marine Services of Springdale, NL and refit last year. The owners also own the ex RCN fireboat Firebird, and the tug R.J Ballott formerly known Jerry Newbury.
Ale Towed in.
the Bulk Carrier Ale arrived from Baie Comeau tonight, under tow by Italian tug KAMARINA. The pair tied up at Pier 9.
Ale ran aground in Long Pond NL, on September 14th. the ship was refloated and took to anchor. On the 16th, TC Inspected the ship, finding deficiencies with fire safety equipment, and the engine room – the ship was not detained.
Ale was towed by Atlantic Fir and Atlantic Larch from Long Pond to Les Mechins (home to a large graving dock) arriving on Oct 10th. The Ship and tug Sailed from Les Mechins on Dec 12th, bound for Setubal Portual, and presumably the ship yard there.
Ale was built in 2012, and is flagged in Singapore. KAMARINA was built in 2010.
First of 2022
The first arrival of 2023 was the Fednav Bulker Federal Dee, Which arrived at 0436 on January 2nd, and took to the Anchorage in the inner harbour. AlgoScotia sailed just after 9pm on January 1st, for the sole movement into or out of the harbour on the first day of the year. (Plus the Pilot Boat)

We added an Air Arm. I drove to Montreal and stopped to visit HMCS Onadonga in Rimouski, and spent time at the plane spotting park at YUL and there was the titanic experience that wasen’t.
Port and Terminal
With the COVID situation as it is, some things returned to normal. Cruise ships returned, Including Oasis OTS, and Ocean Explorer.The Herring fishing Fleet was back on the waterfront, as were the mega yachts also returned to the waterfront.
PSA announced new cranes for 2023. PSA Also bought the Ceres terminal at Fairview cove. The port finished the infill project at Fairview, and began filling in Basin A1 at the ocean terminals. As a result, Logistec moved thier operation to Pier 9. CN added a daily train
Coast Guard
CCGS Hudson returned to Halifax for the final time, after the decision was taken to retire her following a fire in a generator. As a result, several research vessels paid visits, including NOAA’s Atlantis and RRS James Cook.
CCGS Kolpit Hopson 1752 was moved to Halifax due to the sale of Shelburne ship repair to Mersey sefoods. Kolpit Hopson 1752 was turned back over to the Coast Guard in December.
Notable Traffic
CSL Nukumi made her first call in Canada on her delivery trip. The Norwegian Ferry SVANØY was chartered for use in Quebec. IT Infinity was added to IT Telecom’s fleet Tuffs cove took two tankers, one in January, and one in December
Oceanex Sanderling went for a work period in Europe, which saw Other Oceanex ships cover the route on rotation
Warship Visits and Navy news
Visiting Warships included Submarines USS New Hampshire and USS Delaware . The USS Gerald R Ford and its Carrier strike group also visited. SD Victoria also supported joint exercises with the UK. Op Nanook saw HDMS Triton, FS Rohne and USCGC Bear visit the dockyard, with additional visits by USCGC Morro Bay, USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul, USS Cooperstown, USCGC Tybee, The Irish Naval Vessel LE James Joyce,
with the Invasion of Ukraine, HMCS Halifax Joined HMCS Montreal on Nato duties, and two MCDV’s deployed with the Nato Mine Countermeasures group. Max Bernays underwent trials, was turned over to the navy, and needed a bow thruster repair. Margaret Brooke was commissioned and AOPS#4, William Hall was launched.
Incidents
MSC Kim went Adrift. Hyundai Force also had engine issues enroute. A sailing vessel was lost, and found. The Hydra Mariner was Removed. The Ferry Holiday Island caught fire, and fleet mate Confederation ran aground. ZIM Vancouver lost both anchors in Heavy Seas
